HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i women's tennis team clinched a 4-3 dual match victory over San Jose State by winning the doubles point, in a match concluded on Sunday, at the UH Tennis Complex. The match was suspended Saturday night due to inclement weather after the teams split the six singles matches and with the three doubles matches in progress.
The Rainbow Wahine (4-10) came out on Sunday and won all three doubles matches. The team of Florence Wasko and Chloe Bihag got on the board early with an 8-2 win over Courtney Koenigsfeld and Rokie Larijani. UH clinched the point after Kana Aikawa and Sophie Kobuch edged Ashley Tavita and Amber Silverstone, 8-6. In the final match, Samanta Cappella and Julia Sandborn defeated Silvana Dukic and Dana Popescu in a shortened tie-breaker, 7-6 (2).
On Saturday, the evenly-matched teams went back and forth on the scoreboard in singles play. UH won matches at the Nos. 1, 3, and 5 courts as Kobuch, Bihag, and Sandborn all won straight sets matches over Tavita, Popescu, and Sanda Hadzisabic, respectively. The Spartans took the Nos. 2, 4, and 6 courts as Koenigsfeld, Silverstone, and Dukic defeated UH's, Aikawa, Cappella, and Wasko.
The Rainbow Wahine continue their seven-match homestand with matches against Northwestern, Friday, March 23 and California, Sunday, March 25.
