HONOLULU- The University of Hawai`i men's tennis team got back on the winning track by defeating Cleveland State, 6-1, Tuesday at the UH Tennis Complex. The Rainbow Warriors (3-5), who dropped out of the FILA Collegiate Tennis Rankings after losses to nationally ranked squads Michigan and Texas A&M, snapped its two-match slide with a dominating win over the Vikings (7-4).
UH took the doubles point and won five of six singles matches, including four in straight sets. Andreas Weber remained undefeated in dual matches (9-0) and picked up his 10th win in the last 11 matches with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Phil Orno at the No. 1 court. Meanwhile, Sascha Heinemann, the reigning Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week, was equally impressive at the No. 2 court with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Brad Groleski. Heinemann improved to 16-4 overall and 9-1 in dual matches with his seventh straight win. Derrick Lajola, Jeff Fitch and Brent Hunter also picked up straight-set wins at the No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 positions, respectively. The lone UH loss came in agonizing fashion as senior Chad Faulk, dropped the third-set super tiebreaker to Dan Singer, 6-7, 6-4, 1-0 (7).
Hawai`i's next match will be at home Saturday, March 17, against WAC rival Nevada. First serve is 4:00 p.m. at the UH Tennis Complex.
