PALO ALTO, Calif. - The fifth-ranked University of Hawai`i women's water polo team opened play in the Stanford Invitational with a 12-5 victory over No. 20 Indiana at The the Avery Aquatic Center.
The Rainbow Wahine (2-1) jumped out to a 3-1 lead over the Hoosiers after the first quarter, then exploded for five more goals in the second to take an 8-3 at halftime.
After the two teams played to a scoreless third quarter, UH scored four more times in the fourth quarter to secure the victory, 12-5.
Hawai`i was led by Kelly Mason's second hat trick of the season. Emily Cox and Angela Turnbull each scored a pair of goals. Amy Logan, Anna Sieprath, Megan O'Linn, Kristin Swanson and Elizabeth Groh each tallied a goal each.
Indiana (3-2) was led in scoring by Brooke Zimmerman's two goals. Claire Nicholson, Kelly Palmberg and Emily Schmidt each netted one goal apiece.
UH takes on No. 2 UCLA tonight in the nightcap. The Bruins defeated No. 4 California earlier in the day, 10-2.
