MORAGA, Calif.- The University of Hawai`i women's tennis team lost a 5-1 decision to Saint Mary's, Sunday at the Korth Tennis Complex and at an indoor location. The Rainbow Wahine dropped to 2-7, while the Gaels improved their undefeated record to 7-0.
The start time of the match was delayed three hours due to inclement weather conditions. The match began at 2:00 p.m. but in the middle of singles competition the rains came down and made the Korth Tennis Complex unplayable. The singles matches were played a few hours later at an indoor location off campus.
Because of the inclement weather, both coaches agreed not to play doubles.
In singles play, UH won one of the six matches. At No. 3, freshman Julia Hodes easily beat Femke Strijbis in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. Strijbis is ranked No. 100 in the latest FILA Collegiate Singles Rankings. Hodes is currently on a three-match winning streak. Senior Samanta Cappella dropped a tough three-set match to Stef Ordoveza, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 6 court.
The Rainbow Wahine conclude its three-match Northern California road trip, Tuesday, February 27, at San Jose State.
