Kelly Mason scored five times and goalie
Meike De Nooy made 13 saves to lead No. 4 Hawai`i past No. 12 UC Santa Barbara, 9-7, this afternoon in the opening round match of the UC Irvine Invitational.
The Gauchos jumped out in the first minute of play converting a 6-on-5 advantage on Aimee Stachowski's goal. Lisa van Raalte tied it with her first of three goals at the 3:47 mark.
In the second quarter, UCSB retook the lead on Zizi Clark's goal in their opening possession. Mason then pumped in two goals to give UH a 3-2 halftime lead.
In a high paced third quarter, UH outscored UCSB 4-2 with Mason adding two more goals while van Raalte and Kristin Swanson each adding a netter.
The Rainbow Wahine held on in the fourth quarter being outscored 3-2 to win the opening round match, 9-7.
De Nooy made 13 saves for UH and backup goalie Danielle Ingram saw action in the fourth quarter, making one stop.
Hawai`i improves to 8-4 on the season while UCSB falls to 5-4. UH takes on California, who won 14-5 in their opening round match against UC San Diego, at 4:30 p.m. PST.
