No. 4 Hawai`i Tops No. 12 Long Beach State, 11-9

HONOLULU - Kelly Mason scored five goals as No. 4 Hawai`i defeated No. 12 Long Beach State, 11-9, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match in front of 165 at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

The Rainbow Wahine improve to 5-3 on the season and 3-1 in the MPSF, while the 49ers fall to 3-2 and 0-1.

Mason opened the scoring in the first skipping in one of her three penalty shots on the day. LBSU's Megan Winchell tied it and gave the 49ers the lead scoring twice on LBSU's next two possessions. UH then stole a pass and converted a fast break as Lisa van Raalte lobbed one over the out-stretched arms of 49er goalie Kim Hayes.

In the second quarter, Anna Sieprath gave UH a 3-2 lead drifting in a 7-meter shot through the top of the cage. UH went up 4-2 when Mason went cross cage on a two-man up situation. 49er Rachelle Denaro made it a one-goal game as she went bar-down from 5-meters. On LBSU's next possession, Denaro got open again and found the upper right corner to tie it at four going to the half.

UH struck first in the third with Angela Turnbull going bar down from 4-meters out. UH made it 6-4 when van Raalte streaked up the pool on another fast break and lobbed one over Hayes. With a man up, 49er Christina Wensman clipped the right bar to cut the deficit to one. Denaro then slipped in a shot from on top to tie it at six at 3:45. Mason's second penalty shot skipped through the right side at 3:16, but 49er Cecilia Canetti tied it at seven on a 6-on-5 with 1:31 left in the third.

Sieprath broke the seven all tie on UH's first possession of the fourth rattling one through the top of the cage. LBSU's Marina Canetti then wrist one through the bottom of the left side from 2-meters. UH broke the tie taking a 2-1 fast break as Turnbull fed Mason for her fourth goal. UH got its third 5-meter penalty shot with Mason converting at 2:47. Kristy Bagnall skipped one through the right side on another transition goal for UH. Keala O'Sullivan brought the 49ers to within two skimming one through the right side at 1:50 to cap the scoring.

UH goalie Meike De Nooy recorded seven saves, while her counterpart Hayes stopped six shots.

The Rainbow Wahine complete the three-match home stand Sunday when they host No. 10 Arizona State at 10:00 a.m. at the DKAC.
