No. 4 Hawai`i Edges No. 8 San Diego State In Overtime, 10-9

HONOLULU - Kristy Bagnall's goal with 2:26 left in the second overtime propelled No. 4 Hawai`i past No. 8 San Diego State, 10-9, in the Rainbow Wahine's home opener at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex this afternoon.

Kelly Mason put UH on top converting a penalty shot at the 5:17 mark in the first quarter. SDSU's Anna Gonzales tied it on the Aztecs next possession rocketing in a 5-meter shot from out front. Gonzales put the Aztecs up 2-1 on a man-up advantage with a cross-pool cage rattler at 2:37. SDSU went up made it 3-1 on Stacy Werner's shot from the right 4-meter area with 1:54 left in the first.

Angela Turnbull pulled UH to within one at the 6:37 mark in the second quarter going bar down from the front 5-meter area. Bagnall tied it up taking advantage of a man-up situation at 5:56. SDSU recaptured the lead on Erinn Greenwood's 6-on-5 goal on the Aztecs next time down the pool. Turnbull knotted the score at four whipping in a 5-meter shot from on top with 2:08 left to send it to halftime, 4-4.

SDSU Becca Ur scored on a turnover in the opening minute of the third quarter. UH's Bagnall found the net on a back-hand shot from inside the 4-meter mark for her second goal. UH's Amy Logan went bar-down at the 7-meter mark on top to give UH the lead at 4:26. SDSU's Tipahnie Elliott tied it at six on the Aztec's next possession. Mason picked up her second goal at the 3:20 mark converting a 6-5 advantage to give UH a 7-6 lead. SDSU's Werner then converted a 5-meter penalty shot at 1:14 to tie it at seven. On UH's ensuing possession, Lisa van Raalte took a lob pass from Anna Sieprath and slammed it through the left side to give UH an 8-7 lead.

In the fourth quarter, van Raalte scored her second goal of the match back-handing a shot in on UH's first possession. Jenna Schuster pulled the Aztecs to within one flipping in a 6-5 goal from point-blank range. The Aztecs tied it up at nine on a man-up goal by Greenwood at 5:43. With time expiring, UH's van Raalte tried a back-hand shot from 2-meters but the ball caromed off the top of the bar.

Neither team scored in the first three-minute overtime as both teams had numerous opportunities. In the second overtime, UH's Bagnall scored her third goal on a man-up advantage on the opening possession. The Aztecs had a 6-5 chance with one minute remaining but UH goalie Meike De Nooy rejected two shots and then stopped another at full strength to preserve the victory, 10-9.

The Rainbow Wahine host No. 14 Long Beach State on Saturday at noon and finish off the weekend against No. 10 Arizona State on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. at the DKAC.
