Balanced Attack Propels No. 10 Hawai`i To Sweep Of San Jose State

HONOLULU - The No. 10 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team (21-4, 15-0 WAC) swept through the San Jose State Spartans (13-14, 7-9) 30-25, 30-27 and 30-14 in front of a crowd of 6,047 at the Stan Sheriff Center Thursday.

Jamie Houston led a balanced UH attack, hitting .364 while posting match-highs in kills (16) and digs (13). Amber Kaufman hit .727 with eight kills and two blocks while Juliana Sanders hit .381 with 11 kills. Aneli Cubi-Otineru added 12 kills and 10 digs with Elizabeth Ka`aihue posting 12 digs.

An ace by Houston, that trickled off the net, capped a 7-3 run for Hawai`i to start the first game. San Jose State used a three-point run to tie it at 13-13. The game would see 10 more ties before the Rainbow Wahine broke through with a 6-1 run, taking a 28-24 advantage before closing out the game 30-25.

Hawai`i opened a 10-6 lead in game two before the Spartans went on an 8-1 run, giving them a 14-11 edge. After the SJSU lead got to 16-12, UH went on a 4-0 run, tying the score at 16-16. The Spartans pulled ahead again 22-19 and 24-22 before a timely 7-2 spurt gave Hawai`i game point at 29-26. SJSU fought off one game point before a Kaufman kill ended game two 30-27.

UH opened an 18-5 advantage, on the strength of a 9-0 run on the serve of Jessica Keefe, to start game three. After building the comfortable lead, Hawai`i Head Coach Dave Shoji was able to play a lot of his players off the bench, eventually taking the third game 30-14.

The Rainbow Wahine will close out the WAC regular season with a match vs. Utah State on Nov. 11, at 7 p.m., at the Stan Sheriff Center.
