HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i dropped both matches tonight against Pepperdine University in an exhibition men's volleyball doubleheader in front of 283 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Pepperdine took the first match by a score of 31-29, 30-22, 28-30, 30-25. In the four games, the Waves hit .317 behind Matt McKee's 19 kills. Brent Schirripa posted 14 kills and hit .407, while Chase Ross added 13 slams. Kasey Crider handed out 57 assists in the four sets.
The Warriors were led by the trio of Nemanja Komar (13 kills), Brennon Dyer (11) and Steven Grgas (10). Nejc Zemljak dished out 50 assists for the cause.
In the feature match, was a hard-fought four games with Pepperdine pulling out the four-set victory, 31-33, 30-20, 36-34, 30-22.
Hawai`i's Jacob Schkud had a golden night pounding down a match-high 30 kills while hitting a sizzling .471 in 51 swings. Matthew Vanzant was the only other Warrior in double digits, posting 15 kills. Zemljak contributed 55 assists.
Pepperdine was led by Paul Carroll's 23 kills. Cory Riecks (18 kills), J.D. Schlepenbach (14) and Tyler Jaynes (12) also had big hitting nights. Jonathan Winder distributed 64 assists as the Waves out hit UH .324 to .252.
UH finished the fall exhibition slate with a 3-5 record. The Warriors open the 2008 regular season hosting the 14th Outrigger Hotels Invitational Jan. 3-5 against UCLA, Ball State and Penn State.
