Warriors, Waves Split Volleyball Doubleheader

HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i men's volleyball team split against Pepperdine University in a pair of exhibition matches tonight in front of 295 at the Stan Sheriff Center.

In the first match, UH defeated the Waves in four, 30-22, 29-31, 30-28, 30-25.

Nemanja Komar led the Warriors with 18 kills while hitting at a .457 clip. Matias Brizuela and Steven Grgas each contributed 10 kills apiece. Setter Nejc Zemljak handed out 52 assists.

Pepperdine was led by Matt McKee's match-high 24 kills. Hitters Chase Ross and Brent Schirripa sported 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Kasey Crider dished out 57 assists.

UH out hit (.316 to .219), dug (55-51) and blocked (11.0-7.5) the Waves.

Pepperdine took the second match in straight sets, winning 30-23, 30-21, 30-23.

Matt Vanzant led the Warrior attack with a team-high 14 kills with Zemljak adding 30 assists.

The Waves had three hitters in double digit kills led by Paul Carroll's 17. J.D. Schlepenbach and Cory Riecks each posted 12 kills, while setter Jonathan Winder had 40 assists.

The Waves out hit UH .371 to .146 in the second match. Pepperdine had a huge blocking advantage up front, 14 to 2.

The two teams meet again Tuesday in another exhibition doubleheader with the first match to start at 4:0 p.m. and the second to follow at 7:00 p.m.
