WAIKOLOA, Hawai'i - University of Hawai`i men's tennis players
Sascha Heinemann and
Andreas Weber advanced to the third round of the qualifying singles draw at the USTA Waikoloa Futures pro circuit tournament, Sunday, at the Hilton Waikoloa Resort.
Heinemann, an Eschwege, Germany native, dropped Matthew Short of Great Britain in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. Weber, a Huenfeld, Germany native ousted Nikola Petrov of Bulgaria in two sets, 6-4, 5-3, retired.
Heinemann and Weber are one match away from qualifying into the main singles draw. Heinemann, seeded No. 4 in the tournament and ranked No. 50 in the ITA preseason rankings, will next face Laurent Colombo of France. Weber, ranked No. 28 in the ITA preseason rankings, will next compete against Dennis Lajola, brother of former Rainbow Warrior and current Rainbow Wahine tennis assistant coach, Derrick Lajola.
Eight qualifiers will advance to the 64-player main draw, beginning on Tuesday. The pro circuit tournament continues throughout the week.
