HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i men's basketball team picked up its second win of the season with a comfortable 79-58 victory over Coppin State Tuesday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Rainbow Warriors moved to 2-3 on the year.
UH defeated Coppin State in Honolulu last year by 12 points and were never threatened in this year's rematch. The Eagles (3-4) came in short-handed, playing without leading scorer Tywain McKee (21.2 ppg).
After a back-and-forth first half, Hawai`i put its foot on the pedal in the second half. Hawai`i took an eight-point lead into the locker room and enjoyed its first double-digit lead of the game when Bobby Nash hit a three-pointer on UH's first possession in the second half. UH never looked back, extending its lead to as many as 24 points late in the game.
After missing the first four games of the season, senior co-captain Matt Gibson made his first appearance of the year, providing a much-needed spark at the point. Gibson led five 'Bows in double figures with a game-high 18 points. The 6-5 guard also added six assists and four rebounds in 26 minutes of action off the bench.
Riley Luettgerodt finished with 17 points and a team-high seven rebounds and Bill Amis posted a season-high 16 points, six rebounds and three blocks. Jared Dillinger (11 points) and Nash (10) also finished in double figures for the 'Bows, who nailed a season-high nine three-pointers.
A'Daeron Duncan led the Eagles 15 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
The `Bows next head to California to face San Diego on Sunday, Dec. 2 in a rematch of the Nov. 9 season-opener won by the Toreros, 73-72. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. PST (Noon HT) at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
