WAILEA, Maui - The University of Hawai`i men's tennis team lost to Pac-10 powerhouse and No. 61 Stanford, 6-1, in a mock dual match, Tuesday afternoon at the Grand Wailea Resort.
In singles play, Rainbow Warrior sophomore Andreas Weber, ranked No. 28 in the ITA preseason rankings, defeated 36th-ranked Matt Bruch in three exciting sets, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 1 position. Weber has won six of his last eight singles matches. Bruch has won the Pac-10 singles championships the last two seasons.
UH junior Sascha Heinemann, ranked No. 50, lost a tough 7-5, 6-3 decision to No. 118 Alex Clayton at the No. 2 court. Clayton reached the semifinals of the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, one of the three major collegiate tournaments.
Junior Jeff Fitch lost a heartbreaking match in two tight tiebreakers to 48th-ranked Richard Wire, 7-6(5), 7-6(3) at the No. 3 position.
In doubles play, the team of UH's Fitch and sophomore Spence Mendoza defeated Blake Mueller and Ted Kelly, 9-8 at No. 2. At the No. 1 position, the dynamic duo of No. 48 Heinemann and Weber lost to Matt Bruch and Alex Clayton in a competitive match, 8-5.
With only five players, the Rainbow Warriors forfeited No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles. The dual match results will not count toward either team's record, however, individual results will count.
The match concluded the fall season for the Rainbow Warriors. UH will open the spring season at home against SEC powerhouse and 14th-ranked Alabama, on January 10.
