HONOLULU - The No. 12 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team (13-3, 7-0 WAC) defeated the Fresno State Bulldogs (4-14, 2-6) 30-17, 30-22, 13-30 and 30-22 in front of a crowd of 6,361 at the Stan Sheriff Center Sunday.
Aneli Cubi-Otineru (16 kills, 12 digs) and Tara Hittle (11 kills, 18 digs) had double-doubles to lead the way for the Rainbow Wahine. Jamie Houston added 24 kills while Elizabeth Ka`aihue posted 26 digs. Amber Kaufman had seven kills and four blocks while Juliana Sanders put up seven kills and two blocks. Stephanie Brandt set the UH attack, posting 57 assists, 11 digs and three blocks.
Hawai`i jumped ahead 6-1 to start the first game. The Bulldogs rallied to cut their deficit to 14-13 before Ka`aihue served UH on a 9-0 run, pushing the Rainbow Wahine lead to 23-13. UH continued to roll throughout the game, taking it 30-17.
A 5-1 run by Fresno State put the Bulldogs ahead 8-6 early in game two. They increased their lead to 14-9 before Jayme Lee served a 6-0 UH run, putting the Rainbow Wahine ahead 15-14. Hawai`i would never relinquish the lead again, as they scored 11 of the final 16 points to take game two 30-22.
Hawai`i came out flat in game three as seven UH hitting errors allowed the Bulldogs to take a 14-3 lead early on. The Rainbow Wahine weren't able to make any runs to get back into the game, losing 30-13.
Game four started out tight with Fresno State tying the score at 7-7. But the Rainbow Wahine came out of their funk with a 10-2 run, putting them ahead 17-9. Hawai`i got their lead as high as 11 points on a few occasions before taking game four 30-22.
The Rainbow Wahine will now head out on another three-match WAC road trip, playing at Boise State (Oct. 11), Idaho (Oct. 13) and Utah State (Oct. 17).
