HONOLULU - The No. 12 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team (12-3, 6-0 WAC) defeated the Nevada Wolf Pack (7-7, 4-3) 30-13, 30-25 and 30-19 in front of a crowd of 6,744 at the Stan Sheriff Center Friday.
Tara Hittle had a great match, hitting a career-high .706 with 13 kills and nine digs. Jamie Houston added 16 kills with a .419 hitting percentage while Aneli Otineru had seven kills and 13 digs. Stephanie Brandt posted 32 assists and seven digs.
Hawai`i opened the first game ahead 5-1. The Wolf Pack cut the deficit to 7-5, only to see a big 14-2 run push the Rainbow Wahine to a 21-7 advantage. UH continued to apply the pressure the rest of the way, taking game one 30-13.
Nevada opened a 9-5 edge to start game two. But Hawai`i quickly responded with a 6-1 run, taking the lead at 11-10. UH increased their lead to 21-15 and 25-20 before Nevada came back, scoring four of the next five points to cut it back to 26-24. But that was as close as it would be, as the Rainbow Wahine closed out the second game 30-25.
UH jumped out to leads of 8-2 and 14-5 to start the third game. After pulling ahea 17-6, Hawai`i started to let up as Nevada got the deficit to 19-12. But the Rainbow Wahine just had too much firepower, taking a 28-15 lead before winning game three 30-19.
The Rainbow Wahine will next host Fresno State at the Stan Sheriff Center at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 7.
