MALIBU, Calif. - The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team completed day two of the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Western Regional Championships, Thursday, at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
In singles play, junior and eighth-seeded Sascha Heinemann ousted Achim Ceban of No. 46 San Diego State in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the second round of the main singles draw. Heinemann, ranked No. 50 in the ITA preseason singles rankings, will next face Nick Meister of No. 8 UCLA in the round of 32.
Rainbow Warrior junior Jeff Fitch defeated Jose Munoz of San Diego in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, to advance to the third round of the main singles draw. Fitch will next challenge No. 2 seed Harel Srugo of UCLA. Srugo is ranked No. 16 in the ITA preseason singles rankings.
UH freshman Craig Faulk dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision to Alex Moreno of No. 20 Pepperdine in the second round of the main singles draw. Faulk will next face Stephen Stege of UC Irvine in the consolation singles draw.
Hawai'i sophomore and fifth-seeded Andreas Weber withdrew from the tournament. Sophomore Spence Mendoza will next play Nils Schive of San Diego in the consolation singles draw.
The six-day individual singles and doubles tournament includes players from 14 West Region teams. The tournament continues throughout the week.
