Rainbow Warriors Complete First Day Of West Region Championships

MALIBU, Calif. - The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team completed day one of the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Western Regional Championships, Wednesday, at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center. Five singles players and two doubles team represent UH in the tournament.

In doubles play, the team of junior Jeff Fitch and freshman Craig Faulk were ousted by Arizona's Claudio Christen and Jay Goldman, 8-3, in the first round of the main doubles draw. The dynamic duo of junior Sascha Heinemann and sophomore Andreas Weber, seeded No. 3 and ranked No. 48, received a first round bye, and will play UC Santa Barbara's Nigel Barton and Bijan Hejazi in the second round.

In singles play, sophomore Spence Mendoza lost a tight three-set match to San Diego State's Andre Feliz, 7-5, 6-7, 6-2 in the first round of the main singles draw. Weber, Heinemann, Faulk, and Fitch all received first round byes and will play on Thursday.

Weber, seeded No. 5 and ranked No. 28th nationally, will play Michael Look of No. 8 UCLA. Heinemann, seeded No. 8 and ranked No. 50th nationally, will face Achim Ceban of No. 46 San Diego State. Faulk will compete against Alex Moreno of No. 20 Pepperdine and Fitch will play San Diego's Jose Munoz.

The six-day individual singles and doubles tournament includes players from 14 West Region teams. The tournament continues throughout the week.
