No. 11 Rainbow Wahine Conclude Road Trip With Sweep Of Utah State

LOGAN, Utah - The No. 11 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team (16-3, 10-0 WAC) swept the Utah State Aggies (9-10, 6-4) 30-27, 30-17 and 30-22 at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum Monday, completing their second three-match Western Athletic Conference road trip undefeated.

Aneli Cubi-Otineru led the way for UH, hitting .364 with 16 kills and nine digs. Tara Hittle added seven kills and six digs, hitting .385 while Juliana Sanders hit .312 with seven kills and three blocks. Jamie Houston added 14 kills and seven digs with Stephanie Brandt posting 43 assists and 12 digs. Elizabeth Ka`aihue had 11 digs to help the Rainbow Wahine defensive effort.

Hawai`i used an early 6-3 run to take an early 10-6 edge in game one. UH got their lead to five points on a couple occasions. But Utah State kept coming back, tying the score at 24-24. The Rainbow Wahine would score the next two points and never look back, taking the first game 30-27.

A four-point run by UH ended a back-and-forth start to game two, giving the Rainbow Wahine a 9-6 edge. The Hawai`i offense stayed hot in the second game as they connected on 12 of their first 17 attempts for a .706 hitting percentage, leading to 14-9 advantage. A 10-2 UH run pushed the lead to 24-12 before the Rainbow Wahine closed out game two, 30-17.

Utah State held an early 8-4 lead to start game three. The Aggies got their advantage to 11-6 before a big 6-0 run on Hittle's serve gave UH a 12-11 edge. Hawai`i continued to roll throughout the game, getting their lead to 27-19 before taking it 30-22.

The Rainbow Wahine will head home for a few days before making a non-conference road trip to Lincoln, Neb., to face the top-ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers on Sunday, Oct. 21, at 3 p.m. (10 a.m. HST).
