T-Birds Soar Past UH In Exhibition

HONOLULU - The British Columbia Thunderbirds swept the University of Hawai`i men's volleyball team tonight in an exhibition match in front of 1,465 fans at the Stan Sheriff Center.

B.C. got 13 kills from Andrew Bonner and Christoph Eichbaum added 12 as the T-Birds defeated the Warriors 30-23, 30-21, 30-25. T-Bird setter Jared Krause dished out 38 assists while Matt LeBourdais posted a match-high five blocks.

The T-Birds, who hit .357 collectively as a team, avenged an earlier loss to UH in the title match of their own invitational in October. They held the Warriors in check allowing UH to muster only a .212 hitting percentage as a team.

UH's Lauri Hakala led all attackers with 14 kills while hitting .296 and teammate Eric Kalima added 10 in the losing cause. All-American setter Brian Beckwith handed out 37 assists, while Hakala recorded a match-high eight digs. Middle blocker Dio Dante led the Warriors with three blocks.

The two teams complete the two-match exhibition series on Friday, Jan. 5, at the SSC beginning at 7:05 p.m.
