HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i women's water polo team defeated their older sisters, the Alumnae, today 17-13 in an exhibition match at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex.
"It was a very fun match for the ladies with a good turn out," said fifth year head coach Michel Roy. "We've got a lot of injuries right now, but it's just the beginning for us. We should be in pretty good shape by the season opener."
All-American Kelly Mason, a sophomore, led the Rainbow Wahine tallying four goals. Senior 2-meter Amy Logan scored three times, while Kristin Swanson, Brittany Dames and Megan O'Linn added two goals each. Robin Harney, Lisa van Raalte, Anna Sieprath and Jen Hohl each found the net once apiece.
Eko Lapp (1998-2001) led the Alumnae with five of the team's 13 goals. Audrey Harrer (2002-05), Mo Flanagan (UH assistant coach), Linda Roy (Michel's wife) and Makano Whitford (2002-04) each contributed two goals apiece.
The Rainbow Wahine officially open the 2007 season Feb. 1 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at San Jose State. UH plays at Stanford in a single match the next day followed by two days of competition at the Stanford Invitational. Hawai`i opens its home schedule Feb. 16 when they host San Diego State at 4:00 p.m. at the DKAC.
