NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The University of Hawai`i women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to the Cal State Northridge Matadors (1-0) in the spring opener for both teams Thursday at the Northridge Tennis Complex.
The Rainbow Wahine (0-1) jumped off to a great start by winning two of three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. Junior Chloe Bihag and senior Florence Wasko defeated Canna Furuta and Ana Matijasevic, 8-5 at the No. 2 position. At No. 3, seniors Kana Aikawa and Samanta Cappella beat Sonya Kumar and Kasia Krasinska, 8-6.
UH dropped all six matches in singles play. Bihag lost a three-set heartbreaker to Kankey Koichumanova, 1-6, 6-4, 7-5 at the No. 2 court and Wasko was defeated in three sets by Kumar, 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 the No. 5 position.
The Rainbow Wahine will face No. 15 UCLA at the Los Angeles Tennis Center on Friday before going against No. 57 San Diego on Sunday at the USD West Tennis Courts. Hawai`i concludes its four-match trip at Cal State Fullerton on Monday.
