SAN JOSE, Calif. - The No. 15 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team (9-4, 3-0 WAC) swept the San Jose Spartans (9-7, 0-3) 30-20, 30-25 and 31-29 in front of a crowd of 1,081 at Spartan Gym Saturday, running their WAC winning streak to 110 matches.
Jamie Houston led the way for UH, hitting .316 with 20 kills and six digs. Sarah Mason hit .484 with 16 kills and 11 digs while Juliana Sanders had 10 kills, five digs and a .600 hitting percentage. Kanoe Kamana`o posted 51 assists, four blocks, six digs and three aces while Jayme Lee led all players with 14 digs.
A 9-2 UH run early in the first game put the Rainbow Wahine out in front 13-6. Hawai`i would get their lead to 20-11 and 25-14 before Sanders ended a long rally with a quick set kill to end game one 30-20.
San Jose State scored four-straight at the start of game two to hold their first lead of the night at 4-2. Hawai`i pulled back to a tie on three occasions, then went on a 5-1 run to go ahead 12-8, forcing a SJSU timeout. Kamana`o served UH on a five-point run to push the advantage to make it 20-13. The Rainbow Wahine lead got as high as 26-17 before the Spartans made their run. SJSU scored four-straight to force a Hawai`i timeout at 26-21, and got within four points at 29-25 before Houston put down a big kill to end the second game 30-25.
Game three was a game of runs. San Jose State used a big 8-1 run to go ahead 11-7 early, only to see a five-point UH run put the Rainbow Wahine ahead 13-12. The two teams continued to trade small runs with a four-point Hawai`i run putting them in control at 28-26. But an ace by Jessie Shull tied the score at 29-29, sending game three to extra points. Mason then took over, scoring the final two points on a couple kills, giving UH the 31-29 game three win.
The team will head back to the islands to start a stretch in which they will play seven matches in 11 days. It will start with a three-match homestand with Utah State (Oct. 6), Nevada (Oct. 8) and Boise State (Oct. 9).
