TULSA, Okla. - A pair of University of Hawai`i men's tennis players were in action on the first day of pre-qualifying at the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Championships, Saturday, at Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center. The prestigious tournament is one of three major tournaments and features the top collegiate tennis players in the country.
Newcomer Matt Seeberger, a transfer from Division III national champion from UC Santa Cruz, advanced to the second round with a come-from-behind 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-2 victory over Georgia State's Mattias Skold. Seeberger, ranked among the 17-32 seeds, then dropped a three-setter to Texas' Rook Schellenberg, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.
Senior Derrick Lajola lost his first round match to Iowa's J.P. Ritchie, 6-2, 6-3.
Two other Rainbow Warriors are scheduled to compete in the tournament. Sophomore Sascha Heinemann and Andreas Weber earned entry into the qualifying round beginning on Monday.
