HONOLULU - On the first day of the USTA Honolulu Futures Wild Card Tournament, University of Hawai`i men's tennis players
Chad Faulk,
Jeff Fitch, and
Brent Hunter each won all of their matches, at the UH Tennis Complex, to advance to the Round of 16 on Saturday.
Faulk, a senior from Omaha, Neb., advanced after a 6-2, 6-1, win over Jared Spiker, in a second round match. Faulk, the tournament's seventh seed, had a first round bye. His opponent in the Round of 16 is Hunter, a junior from Lubbock, Texas. Hunter won a pair of straight set matches over Daniel Llarenas (6-3, 6-2 in the first round) and Kevin Okasaki (6-0, 6-1 in the second round).
Fitch, a sophomore from Carlsbad, Calif., defeated Stephan Ogasawara, 6-0, 6-2 in the first round and pulled off a dramatic three-set win over eighth-seeded Mark Mestan, 6-7 (6), 6-2, 7-6 (4) in the Round of 32. Fitch will next face Stephen Royalty in a Round of 16 match.
The tournament continues throughout the weekend. The winner of the 64-player draw earns an automatic entry into the Honolulu Futures main draw in mid-November. Sophomore Sascha Heinemann already earned a spot into the main draw after winning an earlier wild card tournament.
