HONOLULU - The No. 15 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team (7-4, 1-0 WAC) swept through Fresno State (2-11, 0-1 WAC) 30-21, 30-15 and 30-18 in front of a crowd of 7,253 at the Stan Sheriff Center Saturday.
The Rainbow Wahine had 15 team blocks on the night, led by seven apiece out of Juliana Sanders and Kari Gregory. Gregory also hit .500 with seven kills. Sarah Mason put up a match-high 11 kills, eight digs and five blocks while Jessica Keefe hit .471 with eight kills and three blocks. Kanoe Kamana`o added 33 assists and three blocks on the night. Sophomore Jamie Houston missed the match for violating team rules.
Fresno State stayed close at the start of game one, before a four-point run on Kamana`o's serve put UH up 11-6. The Bulldogs pulled within three points on a few occasions, before another big run on Kamana`o's serve, this time 5-0, gave UH a 22-15 edge before winning the game 30-21.
Hawai`i was on fire in the second game, especially at the net. The Rainbow Wahine had eight blocks in game two alone, including three during UH's run that put them ahead 12-4. Fresno State put up a four-point run to get it back to 12-8. But Hawai`i had too much as Mason and Sanders combined for a block to end game two 30-15.
The Rainbow Wahine opened game three ahead 6-1, getting their advantage to 15-7 at the media timeout. The Bulldogs made a small run to get it back to 15-11, but Hawai`i had another big run in them, scoring six-straight on the serve of Mason to push their lead to 24-13. From there, UH Head Coach Dave Shoji emptied his bench, playing every available player in the 30-18 victory.
Hawai`i will next go on their first road trip of the season, playing at Fresno State on Sept. 29 and at San Jose State on Sept. 30.
