HONOLULU - The No. 9 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine (5-3, 2-1 WBM) fell to the No. 8 Stanford Cardinal (6-1, 3-0) 10-30, 22-30 and 24-30 in the Waikiki Beach Marriott Volleyball Challenge championship match Saturday.
Hawai`i was led by Jamie Houston and Sarah Mason, who both posted 10 kills. Houston and Mason were named to the all-tournament team. Cayley Thurlby came off the bench to put up 25 assists and eight digs while Jayme Lee had 13 digs.
The Cardinal jumped out early on the Cardinal scoring the first four points and eight of the first nine. Tournament MVP Cynthia Barboza then served Stanford on a 7-0 run that put their lead to 15-3. Kanoe Kamana`o, who made her first appearance in the challenge, was able to serve UH on a three-point run. But the Cardinal continued their domination, scoring 14 of the final 19 points to win it 30-10. The loss marked the worst game loss for UH in the rally-scoring era.
The Rainbow Wahine put up a fight in game two, as they ran off a 6-2 run after being down 22-12 to force a Stanford timeout. The Cardinal got it rolling again though, winning the second game 30-22.
Hawai`i again found themselves behind 6-2 in the third game, but fought hard, getting withing three points at 15-12. But Stanford responded quickly, scoring the next four points to take their advantage to 19-12. They got it to 28-19 before a 5-1 UH run made it closer at 29-24. But the Cardinal weren't to be denied, taking game three 30-24.
The Rainbow Wahine will next host No. 25 Cal Poly for two matches on Sept. 14 and 15 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
