Rainbow Wahine Win Second Straight, Defeat HPU 5-2

HONOLULU - The Hawai`i women's tennis team moved one step closer to sweeping its tour of three of the state's Division II teams with a 5-2 victory over Hawai`i Pacific, Saturday afternoon, at the UH Tennis Complex. The Rainbow Wahine (3-16-1) will close out the regular season by hosting Brigham Young-Hawai`i, ranked second in Division II, Tuesday, April 11.

With the team's 7-0 victory over Chaminade on Tuesday, UH has won back-to-back matches for the first time this season. The Rainbow Wahine have also won three of its last four matches since starting the season 0-15-1.

Hawai`i got off to a quick start by winning the doubles point. After the teams split the Nos. 1 and 2 courts, the duo of Samanta Cappella and Julia Sandborn secured the point with an 8-4 decision over Josefine Paulie and Ariadna Verdejo at court three.

UH surged to a 3-0 lead with singles wins by Sandborn and junior Jacqui Williams. Sandborn dropped only one game in a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Verdejo at the No. 6 position while Williams won the final nine games in a 6-4, 6-0 sweep of Isidora Ljuri at court three.

The Sea Warriors (8-8) ranked No. 27 in the latest ITA Division II rankings, picked up wins by Anastasia Ageychik at the top spot and Josefine Paulie at court five but the Rainbow Wahine clinched the match with Cappella's 6-4, 6-2 victory over Lauren Shin at No. 4. Sophomore Chloe Bihag notched another win for UH at court two, outlasting hard-hitting Elena Hudzikova, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

The UH-BYUH on Tuesday is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at the UH Tennis Complex.
