Second-Ranked Waves Snap UH's Six-Match Win Streak

MALIBU, Calif. - The Hawai`i men's tennis team dropped a 6-0 decision to second-ranked Pepperdine, Wednesday, at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center. The 68th-ranked Rainbow Warriors (9-5) saw their six-match win streak come to an end.

The teams decided to play singles first due to inclement weather and the Waves wasted little time, winning five of the six matches in straight sets. UH freshman Sascha Heinemann had his 10-match win streak snapped by Pepperdine's Scott Doerner, ranked No. 6 nationally, 6-2, 6-0 at court one.

At the No. 2 position, senior Bryon Weinberg nearly pulled off the upset of 25th-ranked Pedro Pico and had three match points in the third set. However, Pico extended the set and won in a tiebreak, 7-2. Pepperdine's Ivor Lovrak did what few opponents have against UH senior Ryan Sceats. Lovrak handed Sceats only his second dual match loss of the season, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 3 position.

"Our guys competed hard but they (Pepperdine) really came after us," UH head coach John Nelson said. "They did what I wanted our guys to do and they kept pressuring us and never let us get into the match. Bryon played a great match. Their guy was ranked as high as 10th nationally and he needed to hit three great shots to send it to a tiebreaker."

The 'Bows will not make up their match against Cal Poly, which was rained out on Tuesday. Instead the team will return to Honolulu to close out the regular season against Hawai`i Pacific, April 10, and Azusa Pacific, April 11.
