IRVINE, Calif. -
Iefke Van Belkum and Kelly Mason scored hat-tricks to propel No. 5 seed Hawai`i past No. 4 seed California, 10-8, in the quarterfinals of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Women's Water Polo Championship at UCI's Anteater Aquatics Complex.
Hawai`i, who is ranked No. 4 in the country, jumped out to a 6-1 lead with 5:24 left in the second period as Van Belkum scored all three of her goals, Mason added two, and Kristy Bagnal netted her first of two. Cal's Vanessa Lindsay scored with 3:03 left in the second as UH took a 6-2 lead into halftime.
Cal scored the first two goals in the third quarter by Lindsey and Mellisa Wheeler to get within two, but would never get any closer. Bagnall slammed one through at the 5:13 mark, but Cal's Allison Gold covered it 30 seconds later. Goals by Anna Sieprath and Lisa van Raalte gave UH a 9-6 advantage heading to the final quarter.
Cal got on the board first at the 5:55 mark in the fourth on Rebecca Dreyfuss' goal, but Mason would come back down the pool on UH's next possession to put the Rainbow Wahine 10-7. Cal's Molly Hayes added a late goal to cap the scoring and send UH to tomorrow's semifinals.
All three of Mason's goals came on power-play opportunities for UH. The Rainbow Wahine converted five of 11 6-on-5 chances. Cal was just 3-of-12 with a man up.
UH goalie Meike De Nooy made eight saves in the match, including five of those stops while Cal had 6-on-5 opportunities.
The Rainbow Wahine advance to Saturday's semifinal where they face undefeated and No. 1 USC at 1:30 p.m. (10:30 a.m. HST). The Golden Bears face San Diego State at 12:15 p.m. in the consolation bracket.
