Rainbow Wahine In Sixth After First Day Of WAC Championships

MORGAN HILL, Calif. - The University of Hawai`i women's golf team is in sixth place at the WAC Women's Golf Championships after the first round of competition, shooting a 26-over-par 314, at the Coyote Creek Golf Club Monday.

Xyra Suyetsugu is tied for eighth to lead the team with a opening-round 76. Lisa Kajihara shot a 78, holding a tie for 17th, while Tara Chappell and Carolina Perez each shot 80, tying them for 25th. Dale Gammie struggled on the first day, shooting 82 to tie for 30th.

San Jose State holds the tournament lead, shooting a nine-over-par 297. New Mexico State (+17) is in second, followed by Nevada (+20), Fresno State (+21), Idaho (+23), UH and Boise State (+29).

SJSU's Carmina Calle shot an even par 72 to lead the way, individually. Two of her teammates, Jenelle Gomez and Sirapa Kasemsamran, along with Nevada's Melanie De Leon, NMSU's Inah Park and Idaho's Renee Skidmore, are all tied for second after shooting a two-over-par 74.

The tournament continues tomorrow with the second round before the final round on Wednesday, April 26. The winner of the tournament will be crowned the WAC champions and earn an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
