UH Women Ousted From WAC Championship

BOISE, Idaho - The Hawai`i women's tennis team was eliminated from the Western Athletic Conference Championship, Thursday afternoon, after falling to top-ranked Fresno State, 4-0, in the quarterfinal round. The Rainbow Wahine finish their season at 4-18-1.

The Bulldogs (16-6), ranked No. 23 nationally, are the four-time defending WAC champion. Fresno State captured the doubles point with victories at the Nos. 1 and 2 courts. The nation's fourth-ranked doubles team of Lucia Sainz and Katharina Winterhalter blanked UH's Kana Aikawa and Jacqui Williams, 8-0, at No. 1.

In singles play, Melanie Gloria, ranked 21st nationally, upended Rainbow Wahine Chloe Bihag, 6-0, 6-3, at the No. 1 court. Sainz defeated Williams, 6-0, 6-3 at court three and Jacqui Haskett dropped one game in a 6-1, 6-0 victory over UH's Julia Sandborn at No. 5.

Head coach Jun Hernandez completed his first season with UH. The Rainbow Wahine return all eight letterwinners from this season's squad, which featured four underclassmen and two transfers.

The Bulldogs advance to Friday's semifinals where they will face fourth-seeded Nevada, a 4-0 winner of fifth-seed Idaho.
