Sceats Lifts UH Past BYU, 4-3

HONOLULU - Senior Ryan Sceats carried the Hawai`i men's tennis team past Brigham Young, 4-3, Saturday afternoon, at the UH Tennis Complex. The Perth, Australia native overcame injuries to both knees in a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Ivan Kokurin, at court two, giving the 64th-ranked Rainbow Warriors (9-4) their sixth consecutive victory.

In his four years at UH, Sceats has been a consistent performer compiling 65 career singles victories including a 26-3 dual match record over the past two seasons. This season, Sceats is 12-1 primarily at the No. 3 court, including a current six-match win streak.

"That was a gutsy performance," UH head coach John Nelson said. "It came down to his match, he was injured in both knees and still managed to pull it out."

After Christian Hand put the finishing touches on a 7-6 (3), 7-5 victory over UH's Jarrod Diepraam at court five, tying the team score at 3-3, Sceats had triple match point at 5-4 in the second set. But Kokurin battled back and won the game. Sceats, who called for his second injury timeout after that game, managed to break back Kokurin's serve and served out the match.

UH captured the doubles point, winning on courts two and three. Freshman Jeff Fitch and Bryon Weinberg teamed for an 8-6 victory over Kokurin and Dominik Kaufhold at No. 2 while Chad Faulk and Sascha Heinemann defeated Christian Hand and Jonathan Sanchez, 8-4 at No. 3.

In singles play, Heinemann posted his 10th straight win at court one with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over James Ludlow. At the No. 6 position, Fitch muscled out a 6-4, 6-1 win over Sanchez. Weinberg returned to the UH lineup after missing the past two dual matches with a hamstring injury. The senior dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision to Kaufhold at court two.

The match was delayed two days due severe weather over the Hawaiian Islands which caused flooding in areas around the Manoa campus. The Rainbow Warriors next travel to California, where they will face Cal Poly, April 4 and second-ranked Pepperdine, April 5.
