HONOLULU - The No. 24 University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (13-5) defeated the Washington Huskies (11-4) 10-8 in the first game of a double-header in the First Hawaii Title Rainbow Baseball Tournament.
Darrell Fisherbaugh (2-0) got the win while Tyler Cheney (1-1) took the loss for UW.
Justin Frash led the way for UH, going 3-for-3 with a home run, two RBI and three runs. Matthew Inouye added a 3-for-5 game with three RBI and a double while Luis Avila went 1-for-3 with three RBI. Robbie Wilder had three runs scored in the game.
Avila hit a sacrifice fly in the first inning, scoring Wilder to put Hawai`i up 1-0. UH then extended their lead in the third, as Avila, Inouye, Jorge Franco and Elijah Christensen drove in runs to make it 5-0.
Rainbow starter Ian Harrington held the Huskies off the scoreboard for five innings, allowing just four hits with four strikeouts. But UW came alive in the sixth, putting up five runs in the inning, including a three-run, pinch-hit home run by Andy Lentz, tying the score at 5-5.
Washington put up another run in the top of the seventh to take their first lead at 6-5 before Frash came to the 'Bows' rescue, blasting his second home run of the season, a two-run shot, giving UH back the lead at 7-5. Hawai`i added three insurance runs in the eighth, highlighted by a two-run single by Inouye, making it 10-6. The Huskies made it interesting in the ninth, scoring two before the Rainbows were finally able to put it away 10-8.
