HONOLULU - The third-ranked UCLA Bruins got two fourth quarter goals by Kelly Rulon to edge No. 5 Hawai`i, 6-4, on Senior Day this afternoon in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
Hawai`i fell to 11-8 overall and 5-4 in the MPSF, while UCLA improved to 21-2 and 8-0.
UCLA's Jillian Kraus got the Bruins on the board first snapping in a shot at the 5:05 mark. UH responded at the 3:47 mark on Iefke Van Belkum's goal to tie it at one. The Rainbow Wahine then took their first and only lead of the match as Amy Logan got free on a fast break and lobbed it in over the outstretched arms of UCLA goalie Emily Feher to go up, 2-1.
Bruin Courtney Mathewson netted the only goal in a hotly contested second quarter at the 5:28 mark as both UCLA coach Adam Krikorian and UH skipper Michel Roy received yellow cards within 30 seconds on one another.
UCLA came out and pumped in the first two goals of the third quarter within 31 seconds of each other as Kacy Kunkel and Monique Blanchard found the back of the net. Rainbow Wahine freshman Kelly Mason fired in a shot with 2:51 left in to pull UH within a goal. Roy received a red card at the 3:34 mark and will have to sit out the next UH match against Loyola Marymount April 13.
In the fourth quarter, UH's Van Belkum scored her second goal at 5:55 to tie the score at four, but UCLA's Rulon got loose at the 4:30 and 2:21 marks to cap the scoring and give UCLA a 6-4 victory.
Hawai`i goalie Meike De Nooy got the start today after sitting out the last couple of matches with pulled left upper quad muscle. The 2005 All-American recorded 13 saves today. She posted a UH record 17 stops against UCLA earlier this season.
The Bruins spoiled senior day for driver Mari Yogi and goalie Jamie Wendell. Also honored at the end of today's match was Shannon Carroll who is sitting out the season.
The Rainbow Wahine take on the New Zealand National Team in an exhibition match at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, April 2, at the DKAC. It is the last home match of the season for UH before they head to California in two weeks for their final four regular season matches.
