HONOLULU - The Hawai`i women's tennis team picked up its first dual match victory of the 2006 season by blanking Wisconsin-Green Bay, 7-0, Friday, at the UH Tennis Complex. The Rainbow Wahine swept all six singles matches in straight sets and won two of the three doubles contests.
With a young line-up and only one returning starter, UH (1-15-1) was winless in its previous 16 dual matches prior to Friday's victory. The win was first-year head coach Jun Hernandez's first of his coaching career.
The teams played the six singles matches first and the Rainbow Wahine wasted little time in capturing the four points needed for the team victory. Sophomore Julia Sandborn didn't drop a game in a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Kari Petrashek at court six while junior Florence Wasko was nearly perfect in a 6-0, 6-1 win over Kristen Leeder at the No. 5 court.
UH wrapped up the match with victories by sophomore Chloe Bihag over Jennifer Tan, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 2 and junior Jacqui Williams over Megan Gregory, 6-0, 6-2, at court four. Junior Kana Aikawa put away Heather Harding, 6-1, 6-3 at the featured court while junior Samanta Cappella wrapped up UH's sweep with a 6-0, 7-6 (5) win over Aschley Jurgelia, at No. 5.
Hawai`i captured the doubles point but not before the Phoenix won their only match with an 8-5 win over Aikawa and Williams at court one.
The Rainbow Wahine will next host UC Davis, Monday, March 27. Match time is 10:00 a.m. at the UH Tennis Complex.
