HONOLULU - The No. 24 University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (12-5) fell to the No. 19 Arkansas Razorbacks (11-1) 5-1 in front of a crowd of 2,405 on the third day of the First Hawaii Title Rainbow Baseball Tournament Thursday.
Steven Wright (3-1) took the loss for the first time this season, but finished with nine strikeouts in 6.2 innings pitched. Nick Schmidt (4-0) got the win for the Razorbacks.
Joseph Spiers finished the game 1-for-2 with a run, a walk and a stolen base. Elijah Christensen recorded the other base hit for the Rainbows.
UH threatened to score in the first as Robbie Wilder walked, stole second and advanced to third on a groundout. After a walk by Luis Avila, one of his two on the game, the Rainbows had runners on the corner. But Schmidt won a long battle with Matthew Inouye at the plate, holding Hawai`i scoreless.
The Razorbacks picked up a run in the third and fourth innings before adding two more in the fifth to go up 4-0. The Rainbows were able to put up a run in the bottom of the fifth as Spiers scored on a wild pitch to cut it back to 4-1. But in the end, the 'Bows just couldn't get to Schmidt or reliever Devin Collis, falling by the final score of 5-1.
Washington defeated UT-Arlington 6-5 in the early game of the day, giving them the tournament's top seed. The Rainbows will face the Huskies in the 6:35 p.m. game after Arkansas plays UT-Arlington at 2:30 p.m.
