Rainbows Complete Sweep Of WIU 3-0 In Rain-Shortened Game

Box Score

HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (18-6) defeated the Western Illinois Leathernecks (2-14) 3-0 in a game shortened to four and a half innings due to rain at the Les Murakami Stadium Monday, completing UH's five-game sweep over WIU. Justin Costi (2-0) pitched all five innings, striking out six with just two hits and no walks to get the win. Wyatt Luebber (0-3) took the loss for the Leathernecks.

Luis Avila went 1-for-2 with a RBI-triple to lead Hawai`i. Robbie Wilder went 1-for-3 with a run and a stolen base while Elijah Christensen supplied the only other UH hit in the shortened game.

UH put up the game's first run in the second inning as Kris Sanchez hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Matthew Inouye to make it 1-0. In the third inning, Wilder scored on a wild pitch before Avila drove in Joseph Spiers, making it 3-0.

In the mean time, Costi was mowing down the Leathernecks. The senior recorded six strikeouts in just five innings, allowing only three base runners, with none getting any further than second base.

Hawai`i will next start Western Athletic Conference play this weekend, hosting the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs for a three-game series at the Les Murakami Stadium, starting Friday, March 17, at 6:35 p.m.
