HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (17-6) defeated the Western Illinois Leathernecks (2-13) 11-1 in a game that was called in the bottom of the seventh due to a 10-run rule that was mutually agreed upon by the coaches before the game.
Matt Daly (3-0) gave up just one unearned run with two hits and four strikeouts to get the win in his first collegiate start. Aaron Madill (0-3) got the loss for WIU.
Joseph Spiers and Justin Frash each had 2-for-4 games with three RBI and one run to lead the 'Bows. Landon Hernandez added a 3-for-4 game with a run and one RBI while Matthew Inouye was 1-for-4 with two runs, one RBI and a double. The double was Inouye's 50th in his career, pushing the senior to fifth on the all-time UH list.
Hernandez put the Rainbows on the board first, hitting a RBI-single to score Inouye in the second. Hawai`i then added two runs in the third before Daly gave up the only WIU run of the game, an unearned run in the top of the fourth.
The 'Bows then added two more in the bottom of the fourth, driven in by Spiers and Frash and three in the fifth, making the score 8-1. After Kris Sanchez scored on an error to start the seventh inning, Frash came up with a two RBI single, ending the game at 11-1.
The two teams will close out their five-game series tomorrow at 6:35 p.m. at the Les Murakami Stadium.
