HONOLULU - Behind a complete-game, 13 strikeout performance by
Steven Wright, the University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (14-6) defeated the Western Illinois Leathernecks (2-10) 3-2 in front of a crowd of 2,475 at the Les Murakami Stadium Friday. Wright (4-1) gave up two runs on six hits, while recording his career high in strikeouts to get the win. Wyatt Luebber (0-2) took the loss for WIU.
Justin Frash led the team offensively, going 2-for-4 with a double, a run and an RBI. Luis Avila went 1-for-3 with a double and one RBI while Esteban Lopez also had a double.
The Rainbows took the lead early, scoring two runs on back-to-back RBI-doubles by Frash and Avila, making the score 2-0. WIU scored one in the second to cut it back to 2-1, only to see the 'Bows answer with a run on a Derek DuPree RBI single in the bottom of the inning, pushing it to 3-1.
Western Illinois added another run in the seventh, but it wasn't enough as Wright kept mowing them down, giving Hawai`i the 3-2 victory.
The two teams will play a double-header tomorrow, starting at 1:05 p.m.
