HONOLULU - The No. 24 University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (12-4) battled back from a tough loss to Texas-Arlington in the day game to defeat the Washington Huskies (10-3) 10-6 on the second day of the First Hawaii Title Rainbow Baseball Tournament Wednesday.
Justin Costi (1-0) gave up just one run in 6.0 innings to get the win. Adrian Gomez (0-1) took the loss for UW.
Nathan Young had a big game, going 2-for-3, scoring his first two collegiate hits, adding three RBI and a run. Justin Frash was 3-for-4 with a run and a RBI while Jonathan Hee (2-for-5, two RBI, one double, one run), Matthew Inouye (2-for-3, one run, one RBI), Jorge Franco (2-for-3, three runs, one RBI) and Esteban Lopez (2-for-4, two runs) all had multiple-hit games.
Elijah Christensen started the scoring, hitting a sacrifice fly in the second inning, driving in Inouye. Young then singled in Franco to make it 2-0. UH then added three more in the fourth as Wilder brought one in before Hee hit a two-run single, pushing the advantage to 5-0.
Young struck again in the fifth inning, whacking a two-run single to make it 7-0. UW got their first run in the top of the sixth before Inouye drove in one in the bottom half of the inning, making the score 8-1. UH added two more in the eighth while the Huskies made a small run, scoring one in the eighth and four in the ninth, before the Rainbow finally shut it down, 10-6.
In the first game of the day, Arkansas beat UT-Arlington 12-4, as all four teams are now 1-1 in tournament play. Washington will face UTA in tomorrow's first game, at 2:30 p.m., followed by a matchup between UH and No. 19 Arkansas at 6:35 p.m. Steven Wright will pitch for UH against Razorback ace Nick Schmidt.
