HONOLULU - The No. 24 University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (11-4) fell to the Texas-Arlington Mavericks (4-8) 15-9 on the second day of the First Hawaii Title Rainbow Baseball Tournament Wednesday.
Tyler Davis fell to 1-1 with the loss while Randy Cornejo (1-1) got the win for the Mavericks.
Luis Avila tied a tournament record with two home runs, going 2-for-5 with five RBI. Robbie Wilder added a 2-for-4 game with two runs and a double.
UT-Arlington got on the board in the first inning after a UH error opened the flood gates on a four-run inning.
Avila blasted a three-run homer in the bottom of the first to get back into the game at 4-3. But UTA wasn't done yet, scoring two in the second and three more in the third to extend their lead to 9-3.
The Rainbows got RBI-singles by Derek DuPree, Justin Frash and Jonathan Hee, cutting the deficit back to 9-6. But the Mavericks then put up a run in the fifth and two in the sixth to get their edge back to six runs at 12-6.
UTA would add another run in the top of the eighth to make it 13-7. But the 'Bows weren't done. First Adam Roberts hit a RBI-double. Then Avila knocked in his second home run, a two-run shot to center to make it 13-9. But UTA would add two more to the slugfest in the ninth, making the final 15-9.
UH will face Washington in the night game.
