HILO, Hawai`i - The University of Hawai`i Warrior golf team shot a nine-under-par 275 in the first round of the UH Hilo Intercollegiate, placing fourth in the field, just seven shots off the lead at the Waikaloa Village Golf Course. Hilo native
Jarett Hamamoto fired a six-under-par 65 to pace the Warriors, and is in second, individually.
Four of UH's five golfers stayed under par in the first round. Along with Hamamoto, Travis Toyama shot a two-under-par 69 to place himself in a tie for 21st, followed by Kyle Walters (t34, 70), Ryan Perez (t45, 71) and Pierre-Henri Soero (t74, 73).
Georgia Tech held the team-lead after one round, shooting 16-under-par as a team, with all five golfers firing scores in the sixties. Tech is followed by Oklahoma State (-12), Southern California (-10), UH and Pepperdine (-7).
Individually, Oklahoma State's Pablo Martin had an opening day 64 (-7), to lead the field. Hamamoto is tied for second with Cameron Tringale (-6) of Georgia Tech, with a trio of golfers, Edward McGlasson of Colorado, Justin Fraley of Oklahoma and Alex Williams of Oregon State, tied for fourth at -5.
Play continues today in Hilo before finishing up on Friday.
