MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - The University of Hawai`i coed sailing team finished in sixth place at the Bob Bavier Team Race held February 25-26 at Patriots Point. After a disappointing first day in which they went 1-6, the Rainbows turned it around on Sunday by defeating four of seven opponents.
UH, ranked third in the latest Sailing World poll, finished with a final record of 5-9 in the eight-team, double round-robin regatta. Participating for the Rainbows were Meredith Adams, Caitlin Hill, Bryan Lake, Becky Mabardy, Eric Oppen, Joey Pasquali and Mike Scott. Saint Mary's (Md.) won the event with a 14-3 mark, followed by Georgetown (12-5) and host College of Charleston (11-6).
The event served as a prelude to the Intercollegiate Sailing Association's (ICSA) national championship events to be held at the J. Stewart Walker Sailing Center May 24th - June 2. The Women's Championship will be held May 24th - 26th, while the Team Race Championship will be held the 28th - 30th. The final event, the Dinghy Championship, will be held the 31st - June 2nd.
Next up for the Rainbows is the Stanford Team Race, March 4-5, in San Francisco, Calif.
