SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - No. 5 Hawai`i knocked off two ranked opponents today in the first of two days of the UCSB Gaucho Invitational at UC Santa Barbara.
UH defeated No. 13 Michigan, 9-2, then topped No. 4 Loyola Marymount 7-4 in the nightcap.
In the first match, UH got a five-goal performance from All-American Iefke Van Belkum to propel them past the Wolverines.
UH exploded for five goals in the first quarter, four by Van Belkum, to go up 5-0. Each team added a goal in the second giving UH a 6-1 halftime lead.
In the second half, Kelly Mason, Brittany Dames, and Sabrina Cook added to the Hawai`i lead and cruised home with a 9-2 victory.
The second match saw Hawai`i take a 2-1 advantage after one on goals by Lisa van Raalte and Van Belkum. UH added three more in the second as van Raalte netted her second and third scores to lead 5-1 at half.
Mason and Amy Logan added single goals in the third and fourth quarters, respectively, to cap the scoring and provide UH with a 7-4 win.
Hawai`i picks up its third-straight win and improves to 6-4 on the season. The Rainbow Wahine take on No. 1 USC tomorrow with the winners and losers matching up against the match between UCLA and Stanford
