TEMPE, Ariz. - The fifth-ranked University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine were upset tonight in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match by No. 8 Arizona State, 8-7, at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.
Hawai`i (3-4 overall and 1-2 in the MPSF) trailed throughout the match despite getting a three-goal performance from All-American Iefke Van Belkum.
It was the second time this season UH dropped a match to Arizona State. The Sun Devils won the earlier meeting, 8-5, at the Stanford Invitational.
The Rainbow Wahine fell behind quickly 2-0 late in the first until Van Belkum pulled UH to within one heading to the second.
ASU popped in another two quick goals to start the second quarter, but Van Belkum, Sabrina Cook, and Kelly Mason's goals tied it at four with 2:30 remaining. But ASU took lead 5-4 at the half on ASU's second goal by Rowie Webster.
It was all Sun Devils in the third adding three more tallies, including Webster's third goal. UH 2-meter Kristy Bagnall scored the lone UH goal in the third to make it 8-5 heading to the fourth.
UH scratched back into it as Van Belkum and Mason added goals with 2:05 left, but ASU hung on to win, 8-7.
Hawai`i heads to San Diego State for another MPSF match Thursday before opening up play against Michigan at the UCSB Gaucho Invitational Feb. 25-26.
