Rebels Bounce 'Bows, 61-58

Box Score

HONOLULU - Wendell White's jumper with just over a minute to play proved to be the game-winner as UNLV defeated Hawai'i, 61-58, Tuesday night, in a non-conference game at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Runnin' Rebels swept the season series between the teams after winning the season-opener 73-59 in Las Vegas.

White's jumper gave UNLV the lead after Matt Gibson's 3-pointer, just before the shot clock expired, tied the score at 56 with 1:21 left. After White's go-ahead bucket, Ahmet Gueye had a chance to tie the score but missed two free throws. UH fouled Wink Adams on UNLV's next possession, who converted one of two free throws with 11 seconds left, putting the Rebels ahead 59-56.

UNLV then fouled Dominic Waters, who made two free throws, to pull UH to within 59-58. After the Rebels got the ball back, Matt Lojeski was called for an intentional foul and UNLV sealed it at the free throw line.

White finished with a game-high 20 points including 11 rebounds, eight of which occurred on the offensive glass. Adams added 15 points and six boards.

Waters, Gibson, and Bobby Nash, and each scored 11 points for Hawai'i (4-4), which dropped its second consecutive game. Gueye had eight points and 11 rebounds.

The 'Bows had their opportunities at the foul line, but converted only 57 percent in the second half and 62 percent overall. Heading into the game, UH ranked in the Top 20 in the country at 76 percent.

In the first half, UH took its first lead at 9-8 midway through. The Rebels regained the lead with a 16-5 run to take a 10-point advantage with four minutes left.

UNLV (6-2) took a 26-18 lead into the half while holding UH to 27 percent shooting and forcing 12 turnovers. The Rebels shot 31 percent despite 1-of-10 from beyond the 3-point line.

The 'Bows got some life in themselves to start the second half, cutting an 11-point deficit to four. But UH got into foul trouble early as Lojeski and Gibson each picked up their fourth fouls six minutes in. The Rebels then scored seven straight to push their lead back to double digits. UH inched its way to within 50-47 after a P.J. Owsley putback with just under five minutes to play.

The 'Bows take the next 11 days off before hosting Northwestern State, Saturday, Dec. 16. Tip-off is 5:35 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
