Lauri Hakala posted a match-high 31 kills, but it wasn't enough as Long Beach State outlasted Hawai`i in five, 24-30, 28-30, 32-30, 30-27, 9-15 in an exhibition volleyball match tonight in front of 678 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
In the feature match, the visiting 49ers jumped out to a two-game to none lead behind the hitting of Paul Lotman and Norm Hutton who finished the match with 26 and 25 kills, respectively. Teammate Daniel Fabry contributed 17 kills in the victory.
But the Warriors scraped and clawed their way back winning the next two games behind playing with much more emotion than in the first two games. However, LBSU took an early lead in Game 5 and built on it and finally eeked out the hard-fought win.
UH's Ernest Vidinha was the only other Warrior recording double-figure kills with 11.
As a team, Long Beach State out hit (.315 to .294) and out dug (65 to 50) the Warriors to split the two-match exhibition series.
In the preliminary match, the Warriors swept the 49ers in straight sets, winning 32-30, 30-26, 30-22.
Steven Grgas led the charge for UH with 14 kills and hit .440, while James Clar added 10 kills. Clar and Sean Carney led all blockers with seven each.
UH out hit (.310 to .140) and out blocked (14.5 to 5.5) LBSU.
