Warriors Beat Purdue, 42-35, In Fourth Quarter Thriller

Box Score

HONOLULU - The nation's top-rated offense racked up a season-high 653 yards, while the Warrior defense came up with timely big plays, including two key interceptions, to boost No. 25 Hawai'i over Purdue, 42-35, in front of a season-best 47,825 noise-making fans Saturday night at Aloha Stadium.

Warrior quarterback Colt Brennan threw for 434 yards (33 of 48) and three touchdowns, while running back Nate Ilaoa rushed for a career-high 159 yards and two touchdowns to help Hawai'i (10-2) win its ninth straight game.

The Warrior defense shutout Purdue (8-5) in the first half and came up with two drive-ending interceptions in the fourth quarter. Linebacker Solomon Elimimian led all tacklers with 14 on the night.

Warrior receivers Davone Bess (113) and Jason Rivers (103) both reached the century mark to help Brennan break the UH single-season record for total offense yards (4,929) and passing yards (4,589). Both records were held by Timmy Chang and set in 2002.

Hawai'i jumped out to a 7-0 lead, scoring on its first possession for seventh time this season, on a 4-yard run by Nate Ilaoa. Purdue threatened to tie the game, facing first-and-goal from the Hawai'i 1-yard line, but an errant pitch by Purdue quarterback Curtis Painter opened the door for a Myron Newberry fumble recovery. Four plays and 92 yards later, Ilaoa gave Hawai'i a 14-0 lead on a 16-yard touchdown run. Dan Kelly added a 22-yard field goal to give Hawai'i a 17-0 halftime lead.

Purdue capitalized on two UH turnovers to score 14 straight points in the third quarter. A 52-yard field goal by Kelly, the longest of his career, gave Hawai'i a 20-14 lead. Purdue took its first lead of the game (21-20) when Painter hit Greg Orton for a 28-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter.

Brennan tossed his first touchdown pass of the night, a 14-yard strike to Ross Dickerson to help the Warriors regain the lead, 27-21. But the Boilermakers scored 14 points in the next four and a half minutes to take a 35-27 with 6:50 left to play.

And then Brennan went to work, orchestrating an 80-yard drive in just over two minutes, capped by a 5-yard touchdown strike to Ryan Grice-Mullen. Brennan hit Grice-Mullen again for the two-point conversion, tying the game at 35 with 4:48 on the clock.

Brennan and the potent Hawai'i offense got the ball back when cornerback Gerard Lewis intercepted Painter. One minute and five plays later, Brennan hit Ian Sample on an inside screen, which went for 28 yards and the winning touchdown.

Purdue had the ball at its own 20-yard line with 1:27 remaining, but Painter's pass was intercepted by Warrior linebacker Adam Leonard to end any hope of a Boilermaker victory.

The Warriors will now prepare for the regular season finale next Saturday against Oregon State. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Aloha Stadium.
