ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team took third place in the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout with a 71-60 victory over Pacific, Saturday night at Sullivan Arena.
The Rainbow Warriors (4-2) won two of three games in the tournament and will conclude their 11-day road trip at Santa Clara on Wednesday.
Guard Matt Lojeski rebounded from an off-night against Calfornia in the semifinals with a 22-point effort against the Tigers. The senior scored 15 in the second half and finished 8-of-10 shooting for the game.
Matt Gibson had 13 points and four assists while Bobby Nash added 10 points and four steals. Newcomer Riley Luettgerodt came off the bench to add eight points, all in the first half.
UH shot 48 percent for the game, forced 19 UOP turnovers, and out-rebounded the Tigers, 35-to-24.
Hawai'i controlled the tempo of the first half. UH scored 12 unanswered to take a 17-4 lead and extended its lead to 25-9. The 'Bows pressured the Tigers into 14 first half turnovers and 36 percent shooting.
Luettgerodt sparked UH with eight points off the bench. The 'Bows converted only 1-of-9 from beyond 3-point range but managed 19 points off Tiger turnovers.
The 'Bows kept the pressure on in the second half as they extended the lead to 18. The Tigers crawled back to within 11 but never threatened UH the rest of the way.
Anthony Brown led the Tigers (2-3) with 19 points and 11 rebounds.
Tip-off for the UH-Santa Clara game on Wednesday is 7:00 p.m. PST (5:00 p.m. HST) at the Leavey Center.
