HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i men's volleyball team swept a pair of exhibition matches against Long Beach State tonight at the Stan Sheriff Center in front of a crowd of 379.
In the feature match, senior outside hitter Lauri Hakala led all attackers with 16 kills and hit a sizzling .433. Teammate Jim Clar was the only other Warrior in double figures with 10.
The 49ers were led by the duo of Norm Hutton who had 14 kills and Daniel Fabry added 12.
UH out hit (.277 to .212) and out blocked (10.0 to 4.0) LBSU.
The Warriors edged the 49ers in the first two sets by scores of 30-28 and 34-32 before finding their stride in game three, winning 30-23.
Setter Sean Carney set the feature match, dishing out 34 assists. His counterpart Michael Iandolo for LBSU handed out 39.
In the preliminary match, the Warriors pulled off a three-game sweep over the 49ers. UH won 30-25, 30-24, 30-25.
Leading the way for UH was outside hitter Steven Grgas who led the Warriors with 12 kills. Middle blocker Kyle Klinger was a force up front with seven blocks, while libero Ric Cervantes posted a team-high 13 digs.
UH out hit (.250 to .080), out dug (44-37), and out blocked LBSU.
Long Beach State was led by outside hitter Francisco Valdez with 12 kills.
The two teams complete the mini-two match exhibition Friday evening with the preliminary match beginning at 4:00 p.m. and the feature one starting at 7:00 p.m.
